Hebei Studio: Unveiling the Sounds of China’s Musical Heritage
Published on
In March 2018, the Global Sound Movement (GSM) embarked on an extraordinary journey to Baoding, China, where tradition meets technology in the heart of Hebei University. Their mission? To capture the essence of China's musical heritage and preserve the sounds of its iconic instruments for future generations.
A Symphony of Tradition
Stepping into the university’s studio, the GSM team encountered a treasure trove of traditional Chinese instruments, including the hauntingly beautiful Erhu, the melodic Guzheng, and the majestic Bianzhong, an ancient set of bells dating back over 2,000 years.
The Challenges of Authenticity
Recording in a bustling university presented its own challenges. The ambient hum of student life, ringing bells, and fleeting moments of quiet added an unpredictable element to the session. Yet, these challenges only fueled the team’s creativity and determination.
Mastering the Craft
Collaborating with local virtuosos Chen Mingyuan and Qin Sixiang, the GSM team captured the delicate, emotive tones of the Erhu and Guzheng. Each note played by the musicians was a window into centuries of Chinese musical tradition. When time constraints threatened to disrupt the session, GSM’s Phil Bush stepped up, skillfully ensuring that the Guzheng’s intricate melodies were recorded in their entirety.
Reviving the Ancient Bells
The session reached its crescendo with the recording of the Bianzhong, a remarkable instrument of historical significance. With no specialised musician available, the GSM team took turns striking the bells, experimenting with varying intensities to capture their rich, resonant tones. The result? A unique and versatile sample pack that breathes new life into this ancient instrument.
Why It Matters
This project was about more than merely recording sounds; it was about preserving culture, sharing heritage, and making the inaccessible accessible. By digitising these instruments and their music, GSM ensures that musicians and creators can reutilise these sounds.
