The Global Sound Movement (GSM) is excited to announce the upcoming release of "The Sound of Heritage" musical works, a project that began in 2021 in collaboration with professional musician and composer Aziz Ibrahim.
This initiative, facilitated by Heritage Learning Lancashire, aimed to capture the ambient and unique sounds of significant historical sites in the Lancashire region, including textile mills, halls, and castle ruins.
The project's goal was to preserve the sounds of the industrial cotton mill industry for future generations, ensuring that the cultural and historical heritage of Lancashire is not lost.
GSM recorded mill machinery and water wheels that had not been operational for decades, as well as ambient recordings and impulse responses of specific rooms and locations.
These recordings were then provided to Aziz Ibrahim, known for his work with Simply Red, The Stone Roses, and Asia, to form the basis of new musical compositions.
These compositions aim to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the role played by the Asian community in the development of the cotton mills and the textile industry throughout Lancashire.
Aziz Ibrahim's expertise and reputation in the music industry have helped raise the profile of the project, attracting a wider audience and leading to greater exposure for the historical and cultural significance of the Lancashire region.
His innovative use of the samples showcases the potential of combining historical and modern elements in artistic expression.
The final performance of "The Sound of Heritage" was well received, and the musical works are scheduled to be released soon, with further performances to be arranged.
Additionally, the project has led to the creation of a series of visual records of the working machinery and processes, in partnership with the National Trust and the University of Central Lancashire.
It is hoped that these films will reach new audiences and help educate future generations.
Overall, the partnership between the University of Central Lancashire and Aziz Ibrahim has elevated the significance and impact of the project, contributing to achieving its cultural and artistic goals in a unique and impactful way.
Stay tuned for the release of "The Sound of Heritage" musical works and upcoming performances.
